Partial Dentures

There are several alternatives to choose from when looking for a solution for missing teeth. The type of tooth replacement we select for you depends on your specific needs. At Cliff Dental Clinic, one of the options we offer is partial dentures.

What Is a Partial Denture?

A partial denture is a removable dental prosthetic made up of artificial teeth placed on a custom-molded base. The partial fills the empty space left by one or more missing teeth and attaches to your own teeth with small metal clasps that hook on to adjacent teeth. We can also create attachments that are more natural-looking, and Dr. Caddell can help you decide which is more appropriate for your needs.

The base of the partial holds the artificial teeth in place and is usually made of a tinted acrylic that blends with the shade of your gums. If the partial is going to be used on your upper teeth, the base rests on the roof of your mouth. For lower teeth, the base rests on your gums.

Why Should I Choose a Partial Denture?

A partial denture may be a good choice for you if you have several teeth missing in one part of your mouth. The benefits of placing a partial bridge are:

  • Making speaking and chewing easier and more comfortable
  • Preventing teeth around the empty space from shifting
  • Maintaining the shape of your face, eliminating a sunken appearance

A partial denture is an effective solution, but we do have other options for replacing missing teeth. Dr. Caddell will help you make a decision as to which is best for you by taking into account your oral health, desired results, and budget.

How Are Partial Dentures Different From a Bridge?

A dental bridge also uses artificial teeth to fill the space left by a missing tooth or teeth. But bridges differ from partial dentures because they are anchored permanently to surrounding teeth with crowns, providing stability and support for the artificial tooth.

Unlike partial dentures, we must remove some of the natural structure of adjacent teeth to prepare for placement of the crowns.  Since this type of restoration fills the space between neighboring teeth and is affixed to those neighboring teeth, the term "bridge" is appropriate.
